Movie of the Week: WENDY AND LUCY
LIVE DISCUSSION
FRIDAY | JULY 18th | 1pm PT
Welcome to Movie of the Week! Each week we’ll spotlight a film that deserves a closer look. You can stream it at your own pace over the course of the week, then join the group chat on Friday to talk about it.
About the movie
Wendy (Michelle Williams) travels through the Pacific Northwest with her dog, Lucy (also a noteworthy performance, by director Kelly Reichardt’s own pooch) in the hopes of getting to Alaska to find work at a cannery. But when Wendy is caught shoplifting dog food and taken to jail, the inseparable companions are separated and Wendy is thrust into a desperate search for her other half.
Why Wendy and Lucy?
This film leaves its mark. It’s stark and devastatingly human in its exploration of what it means to exist below the poverty line in the United States. Adapted from Jon Raymond’s short story “Train Choir” (Raymond co-wrote the script with Reichardt), the drama also put director Kelly Reichardt on the map as an artist sensitive to the struggles of people living on the margins of society. “Kelly Reichardt’s work shows me (dis)comfort in the use of time and space like no other. There is a purity and intimacy here that never ceases to amaze me,” says Galerie curator Lukas Dhont.
