THE COMPANY OF WOLVES
Hosted by Director Neil Jordan
ARCHIVED DISCUSSION
SATURDAY | MARCH 15 | 10:30am PT
In a grand estate in the English countryside, Rosaleen tosses and turns in bed, descending into the dreamscape of an 18th-century wood where her sister, Alice, is chased and ultimately killed by wolves. While their parents grieve, dream-Rosaleen goes to stay with her grandmother (Angela Lansbury), who, while knitting the budding young woman a hooded red cape, begins to recount tales of men whose eyebrows meet and the importance of not straying far from the path....
Intoxicatingly surreal with a sensual blend of classic fairy-tale lore, director Neil Jordan’s The Company of Wolves, co-written with author Angela Carter, is a wondrous feat of production design, practical effects and coming-of-age storytelling. “There is profound artistry on display here,” observes Galerie curator Duke Johnson.
Following a live screening, Academy Award-winning director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire) will join us to answer questions and expound on the craft of his sophomore feature film, which curator Sophie De Rakoff describes as a “fantasy horror film that elevated the genre to such a level that it is now regarded as a true classic.”
