Coming to theaters July 11, actor Embeth Davidtz (Schindler’s List, Matilda, Junebug) makes her directorial debut with Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, an adaptation of Alexandra Fuller’s 2001 memoir.

Set amid the final, violent gasps of the Rhodesian Bush War, this charged drama follows a white family’s struggle to retain their farm and colonial control. Eight-year-old Bobo (Lexi Venter, in a mind-blowing debut) observes her surroundings—her mother’s booze-drenched grief, political unrest in the streets, housekeepers’ biding their time—with a childhood innocence that borders on magical realism, as haunting and enchanting as the future Zimbabwe itself.

Davidtz joins us to answer questions on the making of the film and the complexities of simultaneously directing and acting.
