In the early 1950s, while confined to an asylum and scheduled for a lobotomy, New Zealand writer Janet Frame’s first book, a collection of short stories, was published to nationwide acclaim. The lobotomy was canceled shortly thereafter, saving the life of one of the country’s most enduring artists.

Adapted from Frame’s autobiography, Jane Campion’s enchanting An Angel at My Table traces the author’s life, from a working-class childhood to the incomprehensible hurdles and eventual creative freedom of adulthood, embodying a wholly singular coming-of-age perspective with sensitive detail and flourishes of undeniable magic. The film went on to win the Little Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1990, introducing Campion, Frame and actor Kerry Fox to the wider world.

Producer Bridget Ikin will join us to discuss the making of this gorgeous tale of individual triumph early in her career, sharing anecdotes on the various stages of its production.
